2012 PPA Southern Open Coming to High Point, NC Course #2
2-3 June 2012 - The PPA Southern Putting Tour will host the 108-hole 2012 PPA Southern Open on course # 2 at the beautiful and storied High Point, NC Putt-Putt Fun Center. Course manager Chris Graney and course owner Todd Lecka for many years have welcomed the PPA State and National Tours to their facility, the courses of which are widely regarded as outstanding tests of putting skill. Speed control will be at a premium on the fast carpets of the course # 2 layout. Held in 1961 in Atlanta, GA, the first PPA Southern Open was won by Pete Reed. Last season on the Red Course in Martinez, GA, 1997 PPA National Champion Randy Reeves captured his first-career PPA Southern Open crown by besting PPA Hall of Fame member Jay Klapper and former PPA television contestant Jeff McDonald in an 18-hole playoff after the trio tied atop the leaderboard at the end of regulation play with a then-PPA record 144-hole total of 186. Past PPA Southern Open Champions slated to join Reeves in the 2012 field include three-time champion Greg Ward, 2010 winner Tony Varnadore, 2009 victor Klapper, globetrotting 1998 winner Kevin Lacey, and 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo, who won the 2007 PPA Southern Open on course # 1 in High Point and whose four career tour victories on High Point's course # 2 include the 2005 NC State Championship. Other PPA Southern Putting Tour standouts also expected to contend in the 2012 PPA Southern Open include 2010 PPA National Champion and regular High Point local player Greg Newport, who has won a 2004 NC Tour event as well as countless local tournaments on High Point's course # 2; High Point local star Gary Hester; 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird, who captured last season's 54-hole Randy Carter Classic on High Point's course # 2; three-time Southern Putting Tour Player of the Year Jeff Carr; PPA Hall of Fame member Bill Kirby, who in 2011 won a 54-hole Southen Putting Tour event on course # 2 in High Point; 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson, who triumphed in the 2010 NC State Championship on course # 2 in High Point; and nearby Greensboro, NC resident Michael Hitt, who has notched two career tour wins, including the 2005 North Carolina Match Play Championship, on High Point's course # 2.
